Today, Assemblyman Steve McLaughlin (R,C,I-Troy) attended a Joint Budget Hearing where he uncovered tax increases in Gov. Cuomo’s budget. McLaughlin questioned NYS Executive Deputy Commissioner of Taxation & Finance, Nonie Manion, about the governor’s proposals and received a confession that freezing STAR savings would result in tax increases on New Yorkers.
This acknowledgment was shocking, as Gov. Cuomo has said that there would be tax relief coming for New Yorkers. McLaughlin went on to question why rebate checks hadn’t been sent to taxpayers yet. Unable to give a direct answer, the commissioner opted to place blame on others.
“The commissioner’s testimony this morning confirms that Gov. Cuomo is merely concerned with emptying our pockets to fill his,” said McLaughlin. “For weeks my colleagues and I have argued that the governor’s budget plans would result in tax increases, and now we have confirmation. We also questioned why taxpayers hadn’t received their rebate checks yet and the commissioner avoided the question and chose to blame others for the problem. The incompetence in Gov. Cuomo’s administration isn’t surprising, but taxpayers are owed answers.”
