Assemblyman Steve McLaughlin (R,C,I-Schaghticoke) today called Gov. Cuomo’s Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) issued Friday evening an abuse of executive power and political grandstanding. The MOU unconstitutionally halts implementation of a statewide ammunition registry after it became law as part of the SAFE Act in January 2013.
“The MOU issued by the governor is another example of backroom deals that this administration uses far too often,” McLaughlin said. “It is no surprise that it was issued at around 5 p.m. on Friday to avoid the mainstream media cycle and criticism from his liberal base of supporters. Gov. Cuomo is grandstanding in order to gain traction with anti-SAFE Act upstate voters after years of outcry amidst these unconstitutional restrictions. As I’ve said before, this is the worst piece of legislation I have ever seen and we knew when it was passed that many of its components were unrealistic and impossible to enforce. This is an irresponsible use of power by the governor and I maintain that full repeal of the SAFE Act should be our next step.”
