McLAUGHLIN CRITICIZES NEW EXCELSIOR JOBS PROGRAM FOLLOWING HOWARD ZEMSKY'S JOINT BUDGET TESTIMONY

“Today’s Joint Budget Hearing demonstrated precisely how clueless some of Gov. Cuomo’s agency members are about economic development,” said McLaughlin. “Renaming ‘START-UP NY’ the ‘Excelsior Jobs Program’ is simply a way of disguising the program’s continuous failure.”

“At a time when all New Yorkers are working hard for the money in their pockets, Gov. Cuomo’s program prioritizes the connected and selected by excluding them from paying taxes for 10 years, while existing businesses receive no aid. Instead of picking the winners and losers, we need to help all businesses succeed.”

“This program was meant to enrich the state with jobs and economic growth, but it continues to spend millions in tax-dollars with minimal results. Quarterly reports on this program have also been late and shown damaging results in the past. The new proposal to shift to yearly reporting rather than quarterly reporting is simply a way to postpone the embarrassment.”
