McLAUGHLIN: ASSEMBLY DEMOCRATS NEED TO STOP SHAMELESS CAMPAIGNING AND ALLOW A VOTE ON WOMEN’S EQUALITY

“Today’s Times Union editorial called on the Assembly Democrats to stop playing politics and allow the Women’s Equality legislation to come to a vote as 10 separate bills, rather than an omnibus package.  I agree, and have said the same thing for over a year,” said McLaughlin.

“The Assembly Democrats’ strategy here is shameless.  Eight of these bills have passed this year in the Senate.  We could pass them in the Assembly today.  However, Assembly Democrats would rather let these measures go another year without a vote than enact nine common-sense bills that will help women and families across the state.

“Enough is enough.  Assembly Democrats are blocking passage of the nine points for the sake of the 10th.  The 10th point allows for abortion right up to the moment of birth, and like a large majority of New Yorkers, I oppose that.  Yet the Democrats claim they are only ‘codifying existing federal law.’  That isn’t true, but even if it were, if it’s already federal law, why not pass the nine points now to protect women and argue about the 10th point later?  If the 10th point truly is a worthy bill, then the Democrats should be confident that it will pass, so why not allow it to the floor for a vote as a stand-alone bill along with the others?”

“I applaud the Times Union for urging the Assembly Democrats to ‘get off the campaign trail’ and back on the road to delivering Women’s Equality in New York today,” McLaughlin concluded.
