Assemblyman encourages individuals to give back to their community through volunteering for their local fire or emergency services

Assemblyman Steve McLaughlin (R,C,I-Melrose) would like to encourage residents to take part in RecruitNY, an annual program which allows local fire departments to open their doors to area residents so they can learn the details of what it takes to be a firefighter in their community.

“Volunteer fire fighter and EMS services provide essential services to our local communities,” said McLaughlin. “Their sacrifice, hard work and determination make our communities much safer places to live. Many of us never truly know the tremendous services volunteer fire fighters and EMS provide until we need it.

“In addition to the countless services and community contributions of our local fire departments, it is also estimated that volunteer fire departments save taxpayers $7 billion annually on property taxes.

“I’m honored to join with the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) and our local departments to announce RecruitNY and am encouraging residents to stop by their local fire department to learn how they can get involved and make a difference in their community.”

As of press time, McLaughlin has announced fire companies from the 107th Assembly district that are participating:

  • Berlin Volunteer Fire Company
  • Brunswick Fire Company No. 1
  • Defreetsville Fire Department
  • HoosickFalls Fire Department
