“The election of Speaker Heastie has opened the door for sweeping ethics reforms to come to Albany. Speaker Heastie said just last week that he would push for comprehensive ethics reforms that have the potential to prevent the kind of abuses we saw from former Speaker Silver. But, just days after becoming speaker, Heastie shifted his focus to rent control for New York City residents.
Bipartisan ethics reform legislation has existed for years and it is the time for new leadership to show us they have the ability to execute on their pledges. We have a perfect opportunity to start off on the right foot with new Assembly leadership and show our constituents that we can follow through on commitments. I am renewing my call for Speaker Heastie to seize this opportunity and do what is right for New Yorkers and our government’s reputation and integrity.”
